Daniel Cornelius van Holst Pellekaan is an Australian former politician. He represented theSouth Australian House of Assembly seat ofStuart for theSouth Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia from2010 state election until he lost the seat in the2022 state election.[3]
Van Holst Pellekaan was theDeputy Premier of South Australia between November 2021 and March 2022, and served as the Minister for Energy and Mining in theMarshall Ministry between 2018 and 2022.[4][5]
Van Holst Pellekaan was born inCanberra, to a Dutch father who had emigrated to Australia at the age of two. The family moved toWashington D.C. when his father was offered a position at theWorld Bank,[6] and Dan attended theMaret School. He was active in sport, playingAmerican football andbasketball for Maret, and later moved to Canada to study and play basketball at theUniversity of Toronto.[7]
He moved back to Australia when he was recruited by theHobart Devils basketball team in Tasmania, where he played for four years while studying for aBachelor of Economics degree.[7][8]
After graduating, van Holst Pellekaan moved to Melbourne to work forBP. He later moved to the outback where he and some friends bought Spud's Roadhouse inPimba, South Australia. After seven years, he worked in other tourism ventures, then moved toWilmington after meeting his wife, Rebecca.
In Wilmington, following the announcement of the retirement ofGraham Gunn, van Holst Pellekaan gained Liberal Party endorsement for the seat of Stuart;[7] and was elected at the 2010 state election.
Following the2018 state election, van Holst Pellekaan was appointed as the Minister for Energy and Mining.[9] On 25 November 2021, following the resignation ofVickie Chapman as deputy party leader andDeputy Premier, van Holst Pellekaan was elected as the new deputy leader, defeatingDavid Speirs in a party room ballot. He was sworn in asDeputy Premier of South Australia that day.[10]
He lost his seat at the2022 state election to independentGeoff Brock, who had transferred from theFrome following a redistribution.[11]
