Dan Parsons is an Americancomic book artist and illustrator. He is best known for his work onStar Wars[1] andGame of Thrones.
Dan Parsons started out in comics self-publishing his creator-owned seriesHarpy, which became part of the late-1990sindy comics "bad girl" movement. He wrote and penciledHarpy as an ongoing comic book series, and, with its increasing visibility, Parsons was hired to pencil and ink another popular "bad girl" series calledRazor (London Night Studios).[2] Parsons illustrated the story "Luna" forAvatar Press'sThreshold #30, which was written byDavid Quinn (Faust).[3] Parsons provided wash tones forWarren Ellis'sStrange Kiss, as well as the sequel,Stranger Kisses. He also penciled, inked, and did cover work for the classicBattlestar Galactica comic book series (Millennium Press);[4] All this while still working full time as a scientific researcher atJohns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Parsons went on to release another creator-owned series:Savage Planet, which he describes as a tribute to theEC Comics of the 1950s, honoring the work ofFrank Frazetta andAl Williamson.[5] It was atSDCC 2002, promoting the release ofSavage Planet, that Parsons metJan Duursema, the ongoing penciller ofStar Wars. Recognizing Parsons’ similarity of inking style with Williamson, (the original classicStar Wars cartoonist); Duursema recommended Parsons to theStar Wars team over atDark Horse Comics.[6] He was hired immediately, and worked at Dark Horse as the primary inker on a wide range ofStar Wars titles, includingStar Wars,Legacy,Dawn of the Jedi,[7]Clone Wars,Republic,Rebel Heist[8] and many more. He continued inkingStar Wars comic book titles until the end of the Dark Horse era in 2014, (when the Disney Corporation purchased theStar Wars franchise). Parsons would win anInkwell Award in 2010 and again in 2015, for his ink work on theStar Wars comics. Other inking credits includeDC ComicsNightwingConvergence and otherDark Horse Comics titles: (Ghost,King Kong).[9]
Parsons has also done some work for Hollywood. In 2011, he did a series of elaborate pencil drawings for the season one Blu-ray/DVD for HBO'sGame of Thrones. His renditions ofAegon the Conqueror and other characters have become the definitive visual representations ofGeorge R.R. Martin's literary creations. More recently he illustrated anAvatar: the Last Airbender book forNickelodeon/Insight Editions[10] and a graphic novel adaptation ofAyn Rand’s 1937 sci-fi classic,Anthem.[11] In addition to these projects, Parsons worked on numerous trading cards for theTopps Company from 2002 to present. Parsons is currently penciling and wash-painting a newSherlock Holmes five-issue miniseries (Brothers of Baker Street), and inkingJames Cameron’s new six-issueAvatar miniseries (Tsu’tey’s Path).[12][13]
He is a double recipient (2010 and 2015) of theInkwell Award for his work onStar Wars comics fromDark Horse Comics.[14] In 2014, he received a Ghastly Award[15] for excellence in horror comics. In September 2018, Parsons was namedInkwell AwardsSpecial Ambassador.[16][17]
