Dan Kutler (born May 2, 1970 inMountain View, California) is an American-born former swimmer and butterfly specialist, who swam forUCLA and participated forIsrael in the1996 Olympics inAtlanta.[1][2]
Kutler was born in Mountain View, California on May 2, 1970.[3] He isJewish[4] and grew up inSanta Clara, California.
Kutler swam forCupertino High School, where he was a three timeAll-American swimmer, and captured All America honors inwater polo.[2] Completing his Senior year in High School at 18, he attended the August, 1988 Olympic trials at theTexas Swim Center inAustin, and placed 57th in the 50-meter free with a time of 23.90, far from the third place finish needed to qualify in the event.[5]
He competed forUCLA from 1988 to 1992 under Hall of Fame CoachRon Ballatore, where he was a 7-time All American. Kutler's teams at UCLA were perennial top-ten contenders in NCAA national competition.[6][2] Considered one of the Pac-10 Conference’s top sprinters and relay members while at UCLA, at the 1991FISU World University Games in England, he was a member of the UCLA’s gold medal 400-Meter Medley Relay Team. In 1990, he helped UCLA capture a championship in the Pac-10 400-Meter Medley Relay, and a second-place finish in the 200-Meter Freestyle Relay. Kutler placed first in both the 100-Meter Freestyle (51.50) and the 100-Meter Butterfly (55.20) at the 1990 Olympic Festival.[2] At the 1989 Olympic Festival in Oklahoma City, he won a gold in the 100-meter butterfly.[7]
After completing UCLA, Kutler moved toIsrael in 1994 to begin swimming for their national team in preparation for the1996 Olympics inAtlanta. InAtlanta, he swam the butterfly leg for the four-man 4x100 meter medley withYoav Bruck, Eitan Urbach, andVadim Alexeev.[8] The team reached the final, taking eighth place.[9] He retired after the Olympics.[10]
He captured a silver medal at the Men's 50-meter Butterfly with a time of 24.71 in France on March 2, 1996 at the FINA Swimming World Cup, and took the a bronze in the Men's 50-meter Butterfly, with a time of 24.40 on October 2, 1996 at the FINA World Cup in Germany.[11]
In 1997 he was inducted into theSouthern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.[2]
