Dafne Keen Fernández (born 4 January 2005) is a Spanish and British actress.[2] Keen made her debut as a child actress on the seriesThe Refugees (2015). Herbreakthrough role was asLaura, in theX-Men superhero filmLogan (2017) which she reprised for theMarvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) filmDeadpool & Wolverine (2024). She also starred asLyra Belacqua in the television seriesHis Dark Materials (2019–2022) and Jecki Lon in theStar Wars seriesThe Acolyte (2024).

Early life

Keen was born on 4 January 2005 inMadrid.[3] Her parents are English actorWill Keen, and Spanish actress and director María Fernández Ache.[4][5] Her paternal great-grandfather wasEdward Curzon, 6th Earl Howe.[6][7] Her aunts are poetAlice Oswald and writerLaura Beatty.[8][9]

Career

Keen made her acting debut in 2015 at the age of 10, on theBBC television seriesThe Refugees, where she starred alongside her father Will.[10][11] The show ran during 2015, ending after one season.

Keen was next cast inJames Mangold'ssuperhero filmLogan asLaura, the child clone ofWolverine, played byHugh Jackman.[12][13][14] Casting director Priscilla John endorsed Keen for the role, saying that "She had an innocence and a vulnerability... people are going to fall in love with her."[15][16] The film was released in 2017 to commercial and critical success, and is ranked among the best superhero movies of all time.[17][18] Writing forVanity Fair, Lisa Liebman called Keen "extraordinary" and "memorable not only for her slice-and-dice adamantium-claw action scenes but also for her ability to convey the young heroine's feral yet innocent nature."[15] Tasha Robinson ofThe Verge said Keen's "indomitability and ferocious energy go a long way toward keeping the film from wallowing in its own misery."[19] Keen won theEmpire Award for Best Newcomer, and nominations from theCritics' Choice Movie Awards,Chicago Film Critics Association, andSaturn Awards,[20][21][22] among other accolades.

In 2018, Keen was cast asLyra Belacqua in theBBC/HBO seriesHis Dark Materials, an adaptation of thebook trilogy of the same name.[23] To prepare for the role, Keen "religiously" read the books in her first two weeks on set.[24][25] Her father Will stars with her, playingHugh MacPhail.[26] The series ran from 2019 to 2022.[27][28] Keen remarked toW that "I've grown up on the show. It's really hitting me now."[29] On her portrayal,The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg called Keen "star-studded"[30] and Allison Shoemaker forRogerEbert.com said she was "excellent (and perfectly cast)".[31] Keen was nominated for theBritish Academy Cymru for Best Actress in 2020.[32]

Keen next starred alongsideAndy García inCharles McDougall'scomedy-drama filmAna. She worked on the film immediately afterLogan in 2017,[33][34] and after a series of delays, it was released in 2020.[35] The film received mixed reviews, although Amari Allah ofWherever I Look praised Keen's "charisma and presence" and compared her to a youngerNatalie Portman.[36][37]

In 2022, Keen joined the cast ofLeslye Headland'sStar Wars seriesThe Acolyte.[38][39] Headland created the character Jecki for Keen after seeing her performance inLogan.[40] Keen got into character by listening toDavid Bowie and joked with Headland that her character also looked like the musician.[41] The series premiered onDisney+ in 2024. Also in 2024, in a surprise reveal,[42] she reprised her role as Laura in theMarvel Cinematic Universe filmDeadpool & Wolverine, reuniting with Jackman.[43][44] It became Keen's highest-grossing release, thesecond-highest-grossing film of 2024,[45] and thehighest-grossing R-rated film of all time.[46] In 2025, Keen starred in horror filmWhistle, directed byCorin Hardy.[47]

She will star inJay Hernandez's directorial debutNight Comes and the third season of theDisney+ adaptation ofPercy Jackson and the Olympians.[48][49][50]
