Khalil Abdul-Rahman Hazzard (born October 16, 1974), professionally known asDJ Khalil, is an Americanmusic producer andDJ fromLos Angeles. The son ofNBA playerWalt Hazzard, he signed with rapperDr. Dre's record label,Aftermath Entertainment, as in-house talent in 2001. Since then, he has co-produced theBillboard 200-number one albumsRecovery (2010) andThe Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013) byEminem,I Decided (2017) byBig Sean,Donda (2021) byKanye West, andMr. Morale and the Big Steppers (2022) byKendrick Lamar, among others. Furthermore, he has been credited on theBillboard Hot 100-top 40 singles "The Man" byAloe Blacc, "Kush" by label boss Dr. Dre, "Survival" by Eminem, and "Hurricane" by West andthe Weeknd. As aninstrumental artist, he formed the hip hop duo Self Scientific with Chace Infinite in 1994, as well as the groupThe New Royales in 2008, which includes Liz Rodrigues,Erik Alcock andChin Injeti.[1]
DJ Khalil was born inSeattle, Washington, and raised in Los Angeles, California. His father,Walt Hazzard, who later changed his name to Mahdi Abdul-Rahman, was a professional basketball player in theNational Basketball Association. At age 13, at a party thrown by his parents, he metDr. Dre, for whom he would later become a staff producer.[2] Khalil played basketball at the high school and collegiate level, as a point guard atNorth Hollywood High School andMorehouse College.[3]
Khalil began his career as adisc jockey (DJ), and graduated to producing music. He began creating tracks on theEnsoniq ASR-10 sampler workstation, later working in PropellerheadReason.[4] He has produced for a large number of major artists in thehip-hop,R&B andpop genres, includingKanye West,Benny the Butcher,Nasty C,50 Cent,Pink,the Game,ASAP Rocky,Drake,Eminem,G-Unit,Wale,Usher,Logic, andGuess Who, among many others.
He is the host of an eponymous radio station in theSony PSP version ofRockstar Games titleGrand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.[5] He producedBishop Lamont song "City Lights" which appeared in the racing gameMidnight Club: Los Angeles, and theXzibit song "Klack" which appeared in the racing gameJuiced.He produced exclusive tracks forEA Sports fighting gameFight Night Champion.
