Dáire Hughes (born 1990) is an IrishSinn Féin politician who has served asMember of Parliament (MP) forNewry and Armagh since 2024. He was the youngest ever Mayor ofNewry and Mourne District Council and the last occupant of the role.
Hughes is from the Meadow inNewry,Northern Ireland. He was educated at St Patrick's Primary School andSt Colman's College before attendingQueen's University Belfast in Belfast.[2]
Hughes has served as aUnion representative and has worked in the community voluntary sector in Newry andArmagh.[2]
He was co-opted ontoNewry and Mourne District Council forSinn Féin. In 2014, Hughes was chosen by the party to become the youngest-ever and last mayor of the council.[2] He failed to be elected at the2014 Newry, Mourne and Down District Council election to the new council.
Hughes served as a political advisor to the Sinn Féin team in theEuropean Parliament, working on theCivil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and theDelegation for relations with Palestine. Following the 2015 British General Election, he focused on the work of theConstitutional Affairs Committee, charting the impendingBrexit referendum.[citation needed]
Following the end of the 2014-2019 mandate, Hughes took up a position within Sinn Féin majoring on the growing debate on Irish unity. In early 2020, he was appointed Leas Ard Runaí (Deputy General Secretary) of Sinn Féin.[3]
In May 2024, Sinn Féin announced that Hughes would run in the2024 United Kingdom general election, to succeed retiring Sinn Féin politicianMickey Brady as theMember of Parliament (MP) forNewry and Armagh.[4]
Hughes won the seat with 22,299 votes, a majority of 15,493.[5] Hughes received 2,012 more votes than Brady received in theprevious election.[6] In line with Sinn Féin's long standing policy ofabstentionism, he has not taken his seat in Westminster.
