Cyril Ikechukwu Nri// ⓘ (born 25 April 1961) is a Nigerian-born English actor best known for playingSuperintendent Adam Okaro in the police TV seriesThe Bill.[1] Cyril Nri plays the role of Lord Danbury in theNetflix seriesQueen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023).
Nri was born on 25 April 1961 in Nigeria. Nri's paternal side of the family isIgbo, while his mother was originally fromBarbados; they fled the country in 1968 before theNigerian Civil War ended.[2] He moved to Portugal when he was seven, and later to London.[3]
Nri attendedHolland Park School in West London and appeared in a school production ofThree Penny Opera.[3] He attended the Young Vic Youth Theatre in Waterloo, London. He trained at theBristol Old Vic Theatre School.[4] Nri has lived inSouth London since the 1980s.[citation needed]
Sri is best known for playing SuperintendentAdam Okaro, laterBorough Commander, for four years in the long-runningITV police dramaThe Bill. His character became the highest ranking black character in the show.
After drama school at the Bristol Old Vic, Nri started acting life at The Royal Shakespeare Company, where his first role was Lucius in Ron Daniels' 1982 production ofJulius Caesar.[citation needed] He played Ariel toMax Von Sydow's Prospero inJonathan Miller's 1988 production ofThe Tempest.[citation needed]
In 2009, he appeared inThe Observer at theRoyal National Theatre.[citation needed]
In 2009 and 2010, he appeared inLaw & Order UK as Judge Demarco and again reprised this role in the 2012 and 2013 series of the show.[citation needed]
In 2012–13, he played Cassius inGreg Doran'sRoyal Shakespeare Company production ofJulius Caesar in Stratford upon Avon, London and New York, where in hisNew York Times reviewBen Brantley said of Nri, "Mr. Nri's expression as he registers Caesar's words is that of a man who feels a noose tightening around his neck. Wary and sly, scared and manipulative, Mr. Nri is an excellent Cassius, capturing the climate of paranoia and politicking that thickens the air."[5]
In 2016, he earned aBritish Academy Television Award nomination for his performance as Lance in theRussell T. Davies TV seriesCucumber.[6] He also appeared in an episode ofGoodnight Sweetheart playing a doctor at the hospital where Yvonne Sparrow loses her unborn child (series 4).[citation needed]
In 2016, he playedPolonius inSimon Godwin's production ofHamlet for theRoyal Shakespeare Company.[citation needed]
In 2017, Nri appeared on stage at theDorfman Theatre, London, inBarber Shop Chronicles byInua Ellams.[7]
In 2020, he played a barrister in the BBC dramaNoughts and Crosses.[citation needed]
In 2021, he played Sheldon in theRoyal National Theatre's production ofTrouble in Mind byAlice Childress.[citation needed]
Nri played Bill in theYoung Vic's 2023 revival ofZinnie Harris'Further than the Furthest Thing.[8]
