Cuscus (/ˈkʌskʌs/ or/ˈkuːskuːs/) is acommon name given to thespecies belonging to fourgenera ofAustralasianpossums in the familyPhalangeridae:Ailurops,Phalanger,Spilocuscus, andStrigocuscus.[1]The name comes from the wordkusu orkuso in some local related languages spoken in theMaluku Islands likeBacan andAmbonese Malay.[2] It is also applied in parts of Indonesia to theSunda slow loris, where people do not distinguish this from the "kuskus"possums. The loris, being aprimate, is unrelated to the other cuscus species. Cuscus aremarsupials, even though they have some appearances, traits and attributes like those oflemurs ofMadagascar, which areprosimians,[3] due toconvergent evolution.
