To the west, it borders the Frenchregion ofProvence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (departments ofAlpes-Maritimes,Alpes-de-Haute-Provence andHautes-Alpes), to the north theMetropolitan City of Turin, to the east theprovince of Asti and to the south theLigurian provinces ofSavona andImperia. It is also known asla Provincia Granda (Piedmontese for 'The Big Province'), because it is the largest province in Piedmont and the fourth-largest in Italy (followingSassari,South Tyrol andFoggia).[2]Briga Marittima andTenda were part of this province before their cession to France in 1947.[3]
