"Cry Baby" is a song originally recorded byGarnet Mimms and the Enchanters, in 1963, and later recorded byrock singerJanis Joplin in 1970.Bert Berns wrote the song withJerry Ragovoy. Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters recorded it for theUnited Artistsrecord label. It topped theR&Bchart and went to #4 on theBillboard Hot 100 chart in 1963,[1] paving the way for soul hits byAretha Franklin andOtis Redding later in the decade.[2] The third verse was spoken by Mimms until the repeated refrain of the repeated song title.[3] In Canada the song reached #5 on theCHUM Charts.[4] On the New Zealand lever hit parade it peaked at #5[5]

In September and October 1970,Janis Joplin recorded it for her albumPearl, posthumously released in 1971. The song was in more of ablues-rock style and produced byPaul A. Rothchild. Her rendition reached #42 on the USBillboard Hot 100,[7] and #20 onCash Box. The B-side included the track "Mercedes Benz".

The song became usual in Joplin's repertoire and today is often performed by many artists such asJoss Stone,Allison Iraheta,Magdolna Rúzsa.[8]
