Subfamily of crocodiles
Crocodylinae is asubfamily of true crocodiles within thefamily Crocodylidae , and is thesister taxon toOsteolaeminae (dwarf crocodiles andslender-snouted crocodiles ).
Crocodylinae wascladistically defined by Christopher Brochu in 1999 asCrocodylus niloticus (theNile crocodile ) and allcrocodylians more closely related to it than toOsteolaemus tetraspis (theDwarf crocodile ).[ 1] [ 2] stem-based definition, and is thesister taxon toOsteolaeminae .
Crocodylinae contains theextant genus Crocodylus Mecistops [ 2] [ 3] extinct genusVoay .[ 4]
Somemorphological studies have recoveredMecistops basal member of Crocodylinae, more closely related toCrocodylus Osteolaemus Osteolaeminae ,[ 2] [ 3] cladogram below.[ 3]
