Subfamily of crocodiles
Crocodylinae is asubfamily of true crocodiles within thefamily Crocodylidae , and is thesister taxon toOsteolaeminae (dwarf crocodiles andslender-snouted crocodiles ).
Crocodylinae wascladistically defined by Christopher Brochu in 1999 asCrocodylus niloticus (theNile crocodile ) and allcrocodylians more closely related to it than toOsteolaemus tetraspis (theDwarf crocodile ).[ 1] [ 2] This is astem-based definition, and is thesister taxon toOsteolaeminae .
Crocodylinae contains theextant genus Crocodylus . It is disputed as to whether is also includesMecistops (slender-snouted crocodiles),[ 2] [ 3] or theextinct genusVoay .[ 4]
Somemorphological studies have recoveredMecistops as abasal member of Crocodylinae, more closely related toCrocodylus than toOsteolaemus and the other members ofOsteolaeminae ,[ 2] [ 3] as shown in thecladogram below.[ 3]

NeotropicalCrocodylus
Indo-PacificCrocodylus
The belowcladogram is based on a 2021 study usingpaleogenomics that extracted DNA from the extinctVoay , recovering it as a member of Crocodylinae.[ 4] Recently recognised species (M. leptorhynchus ,C. halli and the thirdOsteolaemus species) placed according to 2023 study by Sales-Oliveiraet al. [ 5]
