InGreek mythology,Cretheus (/ˈkriːθiəs,-θjuːs/;Ancient Greek: ΚρηθεύςKrētheus) may refer to the following characters:

• Cretheus, king and founder ofIolcus, the son of KingAeolus ofAeolia (son ofHellen) by eitherEnarete^[1] orLaodice.^[2] He was the brother ofSisyphus,Athamas,Salmoneus,Deion,Magnes,Perieres,Canace,Alcyone,Peisidice,Calyce andPerimede. Cretheus's wives wereTyro, his niece, andDemodice orBiadice.^[3] With Tyro, he fatheredAeson,Pheres, andAmythaon.^[4] When Cretheus found out that Tyro had an affair with Poseidon, he left her and married Demodice.^[5] He also had several daughters, namelyHippolyte, future wife ofAcastus^[6] (otherwise known asAstydamia^[7]),Myrina who marriedThoas,^[8] and possiblyPhalanna, eponym ofPhalanna.^[9]
• Cretheus, also known asCres, theCretan father of an unnamed daughter who became the mother ofAsterius byTeutamus.^[10]
