Cowie Bay (Malay:Teluk Cowie) is a bay on the east coast of the island ofBorneo. It is a part of theMalaysianstate ofSabah and flows into theCelebes Sea. Administratively, it belongs to theTawau District in theTawau Division.[1]

Geography

The bay covers an area of approximately 120 km2. At the end of the bay, there is an extensive shallow water area that is densely forested withmangrove swamps. The south side of the bay is bordered bySebatik Island.[2]

History

The bay was named afterWilliam Clarke Cowie, who was an engineer, mariner, and businessman who helped establishBritish North Borneo and was Chairman of theBritish North Borneo Company.
