Romanian footballer and manager
Cosmin Bărcăuan (born 5 August 1978) is aRomanian formerfootball player and currentcoach .
Bărcăuan was born on 5 August 1978 inOradea , Romania and began playing junior-level football at local clubBihor .[ 1] He started his senior career in 1994 at Bihor inDivizia B .[ 1] He spent several seasons at the club, including inDivizia C , with a brief spell in 1998 atfirst-league side,Gloria Bistrița where he did not play.[ 1] [ 2] Subsequently, he joinedFC Universitatea Craiova where on 10 April 1999 he made hisDivizia A debut under coachMarian Bondrea in a 2–1 home win over his former club, Gloria Bistrița.[ 1] [ 3] He was used by coachEmil Săndoi the full 90 minutes in the2000 Cupa României final , as "U" Craiova lost 2–0 toDinamo București .[ 1] [ 4] In 2002 when Craiova owner Gheorghe Nețoiu left the team to go to Dinamo, he took players Bărcăuan,Dan Alexa ,Flavius Stoican ,Ovidiu Burcă ,Ciprian Danciu ,Ștefan Preda ,Cornel Frăsineanu andȘtefan Grigorie with him.[ 5]
In hisfirst season withThe Red Dogs , he scored a personal record of 12 goals, and also won theCupa României , as coachIoan Andone used him the entire match in the 1–0 win overNațional București in thefinal .[ 1] [ 6] In thefollowing season , Andone started using him as adefender , despite having played as astriker until then.[ 7] [ 8] [ 9] In this new position he was used by Andone in 28 league matches and still managed to score five goals, including one in a 2–1 victory in aderby againstSteaua București as the team won the title.[ 1] [ 10] In the same season, Dinamo won anotherCupa României , Bărcăuan playing the full 90 minutes in the 2–0 win overOțelul Galați in thefinal .[ 1] [ 11] He also helped the club eliminateLiepājas Metalurgs andShakhtar Donetsk in the2003–04 UEFA Cup , scoring once against the first.[ 1] [ 12] [ 13]
He was transferred by Shakhtar Donetsk which paid$ 1 million to Dinamo, being teammates with fellow RomaniansFlavius Stoican ,Daniel Florea ,Ciprian Marica andRăzvan Raț , and coached byMircea Lucescu .[ 1] [ 12] [ 14] Bărcăuan made hisVyshcha Liha on 15 July 2004 in aKlasychne derby which was won with 2–0 againstDynamo Kyiv , scoring his first goal in the competition on 29 October in a 2–1 away victory overKryvbas Kryvyi Rih .[ 1] [ 15] [ 16] That would be his only goal scored in the 19 league appearances he made, as the team won the title.[ 1] [ 15] In the same season he played five games in the2004–05 Champions League group stage , including a 2–0 victory againstBarcelona .[ 1] [ 17]
He played only two games in the first half of thefollowing season as Shakhtar won another title.[ 1] In 2005, Bărcăuan was loaned toKrylya Sovetov where he was teammates with compatriotFlorin Șoavă but made only twoRussian Premier League appearances, the first one taking place on 10 September when coachGadzhi Gadzhiyev used him the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 home loss toTorpedo Moscow .[ 1] [ 18] In 2006 he was loaned back to Dinamo București for half a year.[ 19] His next loan spell was atSuper League Greece sidePAOK Thessaloniki , for the2006–07 season, making his debut in the competition on 19 August 2006 as coachIlie Dumitrescu used him the entire match in a 0–0 draw againstAEK Athens .[ 1] [ 8] [ 20]
After one season in which he played regularly for PAOK, he remained in the league, signing withOFI .[ 1] There, on his debut under coachReiner Maurer which took place on 2 September 2007 he scored one goal in the 3–2 victory againstApollon Kalamarias .[ 1] [ 21] OFI were relegated in his second season at the club.[ 1] Afterwards, he played three games for them in the2009–10 Beta Ethniki , before leaving the club and returning to Romania atCeahlăul Piatra Neamț .[ 1] Bărcăuan made his last appearance in the Romanian first league on 12 March 2010 in Ceahlăul's 4–2 home loss toCFR Cluj , having a total of 168 matches with 33 goals in the competition.[ 1]
International career [ edit ] Bărcăuan made eight appearances and scored two goals forRomania , making his debut on 15 November 2000 when coachLászló Bölöni sent him to replaceAdrian Mutu in the 52nd minute of a friendly againstFR Yugoslavia in which he scored the decisive goal of the 2–1 victory.[ 22] [ 23] He scored his second goal for the national team in a friendly that ended in a 3–2 away victory againstAlgeria .[ 22] [ 24] Bărcăuan's last four games forRomania were in the2006 World Cup qualifiers .[ 22]

In 2016, he worked with juniors at theOlympiacos Academy .[ 7] [ 27] In 2018 he coached for a short whileVoluntari 'ssatellite team in theRomanian third league , returning in 2020 to coach the youth of Olympiacos Academy for two more years.[ 7] [ 28]
