TheCoronado 15 is an Americansailing dinghy that was designed byFrank V. Butler as aone-designracer and first built in 1968.[1][2][3]
The design was built byCatalina Yachts in theUnited States starting in 1968. The company built 3,800 examples of the design, but it is now out of production.[1][3][4]
The Coronado 15 is a recreationalplaningsailboat, built predominantly offiberglass. It has afractionalsloop rig with blackanodizedaluminum spars. The mast is flexible and supported bystainless steelstanding rigging. The hull has a spoonedplumb stem, a verticaltransom, a transom-hungrudder controlled by atiller and a retractablecenterboard. It displaces 385 lb (175 kg). The boat is self-draining and has flotation added, making it unsinkable.[1][3]
The boat has adraft of 3.67 ft (1.12 m) with the centerboard extended and 4 in (10 cm) with it retracted, allowingbeaching or ground transportation on atrailer.[1]
For sailing the design is equipped withhiking straps, atrapeze, anouthaul, boom vang, a high-mountedboom and amainsheet traveler. It has a storage compartment under the foredeck, equipped with a hatch for access. Abinnacle with a compass was a factory option, as was a "kick-up" rudder design and sail windows in themainsail andjib.[3]
The design has aPortsmouth Yardstick racing average handicap of 91.7 and is normally raced by a crew of twosailors.[3]
