Cork East is aparliamentary constituency inCounty Cork represented inDáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas. The constituency elects four deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on the system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

History and boundaries

The constituency was first created in 1923 under theElectoral Act 1923 as a four-seat constituency and was first used for the1923 general election. It was abolished under theElectoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935. It was recreated under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1947 as a 3-seat constituency and used for the1948 general election until it was abolished under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1961. It was recreated under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1980 as a 4-seat constituency for the1981 general election, and has been used at all elections since then.

The constituency runs fromMitchelstown in the north ofCounty Cork, throughFermoy, toCobh,Midleton andYoughal in the south.[1]

The Constituency Review Report 2023 of theElectoral Commission recommended that at thenext general election, Cork East be altered with the transfer of territory toCork North-Central andCork North-West.[2]

TheElectoral (Amendment) Act 2023 defines the constituency as:[3][4]

Cobh Rural, Knockraha, in the formerRural District of Cork;
