Dáil constituency (1977–1981)
This article is about the constituency used from 1977 to 1981. For the 1801–1922 constituency of the United Kingdom House of Commons and the 1919–1921 First Dáil, seeCork City (UK Parliament constituency).

Cork City was aparliamentary constituency represented inDáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas from 1977 to 1981. The constituency elected 5 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) to the Dáil, on the system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

History and boundaries

The constituency was created under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1974.[1] It was only used for the1977 general election and a by-election in 1979. The constituency was defined as thecounty borough of Cork, except the part which was in theCork Mid constituency.[1] The wards in Cork Mid were Bishopstown E, Gillabbey B, Gillabbey C, Glasheen A, Glasheen B, Glasheen C, Pouladuff A, Pouladuff B, The Lough, Togher A, Togher B.

It was abolished under theElectoral (Amendment) Act 1980 and replaced at the1981 general election byCork North-Central andCork South-Central.

Following the death ofLabour Party TDPatrick Kerrigan, a by-election was held on 7 November 1979. The seat was won by theFine Gael candidate Liam Burke.
