Constantin Lupulescu (born 25 March 1984) is a Romanianchessgrandmaster and a five-timeRomanian Chess Champion. He has competed in theFIDE World Cup in2009,2011,[1]2013,[2]2015 and2019,2021.

Chess career

Lupulescu won theRomanian Chess Championship in 2007, 2010,[3] 2011, 2013[4] and 2015.[5] He has played for Romania in theChess Olympiad since 2004 and in theEuropean Team Chess Championship since 2005.[6] He placed clear first inBucharest 2003[7] and Bucharest 2006[8] tournaments, tied for first withVladislav Nevednichy in Timişoara 2006,[9] placed second in the Victor Ciocaltea Memorial in Bucharest 2008 and tied for 4–8th withTamaz Gelashvili,Anton Filippov,Nidjat Mamedov andAlexander Zubarev in the Open Romgaz Tournament in Bucharest 2008.[10] In 2013 he tied for 1st–8th withAlexander Moiseenko,Evgeny Romanov,Alexander Beliavsky,Hrant Melkumyan,Francisco Vallejo Pons,Sergei Movsesian,Ian Nepomniachtchi,Alexey Dreev andEvgeny Alekseev in theEuropean Individual Chess Championship.[11] In 2014, he shared first place withErnesto Inarkiev in theBaku Open, placing second on tiebreak.[12][13] He won theReykjavik Open in 2019.[14]

Lupulescu is an expert in dynamic openings (Benoni with Black) and regularly employs solid middlegame strategy.
