
Conservatism in Malaysia is an ideology associated withBarisan Nasional andMalay-based political parties in general. "Right-wing" or "conservative" parties defendKetuanan Melayu, or Malay political overlordship, and support the propagation ofIslam. Economically, Malaysian conservatives support the continuation ofaffirmative action schemes, namely policies like theNew Economic Policy.
Islamic conservatism has existed in Malaysia since the 1960s, with many Muslim groups taking conservative stances onhuman rights,women's rights andLGBT rights.[1] Conservatism is perceived to have increased in the country in the 21st century.[1][2] CloseMalaysia–Saudi Arabia relations are thought to have in part influenced this trend.[2][3] Conservative Muslim values have occasionally influencededucational institutions.[4]
