Conor James Coventry (born 25 March 2000) is a professionalfootballer who plays as adefensive midfielder forEFL Championship clubCharlton Athletic and theRepublic of Ireland national team.
Previously, he has played forWest Ham United and also spent time on loan atLincoln City,Peterborough United,Milton Keynes Dons andRotherham United.
Born in England, he represents the Republic of Ireland at international level. Coventry is the Republic of Ireland's all-time record holder for the most appearances atU21 level[4] with 28 caps.[5]
Coventry joined theyouth academy ofWest Ham United at the age of 10.[6] He scored his first goal for the under-23 team on his debut on 20 February 2017, in a 2–0 victory againstFulham.[7] During the2017–18 season, he played ten times inProfessional Development League and four times inEFL Trophy and won the Academy Player of the Year award at the end of the season on 25 April 2018.[8]
On 25 May 2018, Coventry signed his first professional contract with the club. About it, he said "I've worked for this for a long time so yes, I'm really happy to sign the deal".[6] On 26 September, he made his first team debut, coming on as a substitute forPedro Obiang in an 8–0 victory againstMacclesfield Town in theEFL Cup.[9] In January 2020, Coventry signed a new contract with West Ham which would see him stay at the club until 2023.[10]
On 7 August 2022, Coventry made his Premier League debut as a 92nd-minute substitute forPablo Fornals in a 2–0 home defeat toManchester City.[11]
In six seasons, Coventry made only 10 appearances for West Ham, including his single Premier League appearance in August 2022, before joining Charlton Athletic in January 2024.[12]
He signed on loan forLeague One clubLincoln City until the end of the2019–20 season on 10 January 2020.[13]
Coventry signed a season-long loan deal withChampionship teamPeterborough United on 31 August 2021.[14] He made 12 appearances for Peterborough before returning to West Ham in January 2022.[15]
On 18 January 2022, Coventry joined League One clubMilton Keynes Dons on loan for the remainder of the2021–22 season, playing his first game in the No. 14 shirt for the Dons on 22 January in a home loss versusDoncaster, where he was substituted in the 75th minute byHiram Boateng.[16][17][18]
Whilst on loan, Coventry scored his first professional league goal on 5 April 2022 in a 2–1 home win overCrewe Alexandra.[19] He went on to make 22 appearances for MK Dons as the club secured a third-placed play-off finish.[20]
On 26 January 2023, Coventry joined Championship teamRotherham United on loan until the end of the2022–23 season.[21]
On 12 January 2024, Coventry joinedCharlton Athletic on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee.[22]
Coventry's first goal for Charlton came on 26 November 2024 in the 82nd minute of a 1–0League One victory, away atBurton Albion.[23]
Born in England, Coventry was eligible for both the England and Republic of Ireland national teams through his mother. Opting for the Republic of Ireland, he played regularly for the country'sU17 andU19[24] sides before making his debut forStephen Kenny'sU21 team during the2019 Toulon Tournament where the side finished in fourth place.[25] Coventry was later named the team's captain and went on to feature regularly for the side.[26]
He was called up to theRepublic of Ireland senior squad for the first time in March 2021, replacing the injuredConor Hourihane in the squad for theWorld Cup Qualification matches againstSerbia andLuxembourg and afriendly againstQatar, although did not make an appearance.[27]
On 6 June 2022, Coventry made his 25th appearance for the U21 side, in a 3–1 win overMontenegro, setting a new national record for appearances at that level by a single player breaking the record ofGraham Barrett.[26]
On 16 November 2024, Coventry was called-up again to the seniorRepublic of Ireland squad for its match withEngland.[28]
On 13 November 2025, he made his senior Ireland debut when he came on as a substitute in a 2–0 win overPortugal in aWorld Cup qualifier.[29]
