Congosaurus is anextinctgenus ofdyrosauridmesoeucrocodylian.Fossils have been found from Lândana, inAngola and date back to thePaleoceneepoch. In 1952 and 1964Congosaurus was proposed to besynonymous withDyrosaurus.[1][2] The genus was later thought synonymous withHyposaurus in 1976 and 1980.[3][4] It has since been proven a distinct genus of dyrosaurid separate from bothDyrosaurus andHyposaurus.[5]
In 2007, a new species ofCongosaurus was constructed after previously being assigned toRhabdognathus, and namedC. compressus, extending the geographic range of the genus into the present-daySahara.[6] Lateromedially compressed teeth show its close relation toC. bequaerti.
