Compsosuchus (meaning "elegant crocodile") is adubiousgenus ofabelisauroidtheropoddinosaur from theLate CretaceousLameta Formation ofIndia.
Compsosuchus was described in 1933 byvon Huene andMatley based on remains discovered between 1917 and 1919.[1] Thetype species isC. solus, and the type and only specimen isGSI K27/578, anaxis with an articulated axial intersection. The genus is often considered anomen dubium.[2]
Although classified as anallosaurid by von Huene and Matley (1933) and Molnaret al. (1990) because of superficial similarities with the axis vertebrae ofAllosaurus, a 2004 review ofLameta Formation theropods found it to be similar to members of theAbelisauridae, includingCarnotaurus andIndosaurus, necessitating the placement ofCompsosuchus as anabelisaurid.[3][4] While a 2011 study classifiedCompsosuchus as anoasaurid,[5] a 2024 study identified it as an indeterminateabelisaurid.[6]
