TheComoros national football team represents theComoros in internationalfootball and is controlled by theComoros Football Federation.[3] It was formed in 1979, joined theConfederation of African Football (CAF) in 2003, and became aFIFA member in 2005. Comoros qualified for their first major tournament in 2021, after their 0–0 draw withTogo assured them of a place in the2021 Africa Cup of Nations.[4]

History

[edit]

The national football team of the Comoros played their first matches in the1979 Indian Ocean Island Games. Those were the only games they played untilqualification for the 2009 Arab Nations Cup in 2006. Those two matches were their first two matches with full FIFA recognition, and included a 4–2 victory overDjibouti. In 2007, Comoros first entered qualification for theWorld Cup and theAfrica Cup of Nations for the 2010 tournaments, but lost in the preliminary round 2–10 on aggregate toMadagascar.

During the2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in October 2015,Les Coelacantes advanced past the first round for the first time ever by beatingLesotho on away goals after two draws. Since then results have improved steadily, including home wins againstBotswana,Mauritius andMalawi in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

On 14 November 2019, Comoros opened their2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a 0–1 win away toTogo, their first away win in a major qualifier. They would go on to qualify for thefinal tournament, their first major tournament since joining FIFA.[4]

In the2021 Africa Cup of Nations,Ahmed Mogni scored a brace for Comoros in their 3–2 group match victory overGhana in what the BBC described as "one of the biggest shocks in Nations Cup history".[5]

In the2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Comoros started off strong withinGroup I after they won 4–2 againstCentral African Republic and 1–0 againstGhana, with both games being played at home.[6] Comoros then won 2-0 againstChad, but they also lost 2-1 toMadagascar. They would be eliminated after losing to Madagascar 2-1 again.

During the2024 COSAFA Cup, Comoros reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history and lost 2-1 againstAngola; Comoros then claimed fourth place after losing onpenalties againstMozambique.[7] Comoros went one better in the2025 COSAFA Cup and finished third after defeatingMadagascar 1–0.[8]
