As a result of his exposure as a member of theMiles Davis Quintet, Prestige Records owner and producerBob Weinstock offered Coltrane a recording contract. By the summer, Coltrane would be recording withThelonious Monk and playing as a member of Monk's quartet for the rest of the year.[10]
For his debut, Coltrane chose a tune by his friendCalvin Massey, in addition to threestandards including the relatively obscure "Time Was". Sidemen includedPaul Chambers andRed Garland from the Davis band, and Philadelphia colleagues Johnnie Splawn andAlbert Heath.
