Colorado's 17th Senate district is one of 35 districts in theColorado Senate. It was previously represented byDemocratSonya Jaquez Lewis from 2021 until her resignation in 2025.[3][4]Katie Wallace was selected to represent the district by vacancy committee in March 2025.[5]
District 17 is based in easternBoulder County, southwesternWeld County, and northwesternBroomfield County, coveringLafayette,Longmont, andErie.[6]
The district is predominantly located in Colorado's2nd congressional district, extends into a portion of the7th congressional district, and overlaps with the 11th, 12th, 19th and 49th districts of theColorado House of Representatives.[7]
Colorado state senators are elected to staggered four-year terms; under normal circumstances, the 17th district holds elections in presidential years.
In 2018, SenatorMatt Jones was elected to the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners, and then-State Rep.Mike Foote was chosen to replace him in the Senate.[8] Foote chose not to seek a full term in2020, however, and his successor in the State House,Sonya Jaquez Lewis, ran instead.[9]
