Thegrey-hooded bush tanager (Cnemoscopus rubrirostris) is aspecies of South American bird in the tanager familyThraupidae. It is the only member of thegenusCnemoscopus.It is found inBolivia,Colombia,Ecuador,Peru, andVenezuela.Its naturalhabitat is subtropical or tropical moistmontane forests.
The grey-hooded bush tanager wasformally described in 1840 by the French ornithologistFrédéric de Lafresnaye from a sample collected nearBogotá in Colombia. He coined thebinomial nameArremon rubrirostris.[2][3] The grey-hooded bush tanager is now the only species placed in the genusCnemoscopus that was introduced in 1919 by the American ornithologistsOutram Bangs and Thomas Penard.[4][5] The genus name combines theAncient Greekknēmos meaning "mountain-slope" withskopos meaning "searcher" or "watcher". The specific epithetrubrirostris combines the Latinruber meaning "red" with-rostris meaning "billed".[6]
