Clonlonan (Irish:Cluain Lonáin)[1] is abarony in south–westCounty Westmeath,Ireland. It was formed by 1672.[2] It is bordered byCounty Offaly to the south and a small part ofCounty Roscommon at Long Island on theRiver Shannon to the west. It also borders four other Westmeath baronies:Kilkenny West andRathconrath (to the north),Moycashel (to the north–east) andBrawny (to the west). The largest centre of population in the barony is the town ofMoate.
Clonlonan has an area of 29,820.6 acres (120.680 km2).[2]
The Boor River runs west from near Moate, and flows into theRiver Shannon at the boundary of Westmeath andCounty Offaly.[3]
Two significant roads pass through the barony. TheM6, a motorway forming part of the N6Dublin toGalwaynational primary road and theN62 connecting the M6 to theM8. In addition theR390, aregional road linkingAthlone toMullingar, theR444 linking theR357 atShannonbridge,County Offaly with theN6 and theR446, part of the old N6 prior to the motorway, also feature.
A railway line carrying several of the national rail companyIarnród Éireann's intercity services also passes through the barony.
