Claudio Gastón Segovia (born August 31, 1933,Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentinian theatre director, producer, choreographer, scenic designer, lighting designer, and costume designer.
Born and raised in the Argentine capital, a fellowship from the National Culture Administration enabled him to study scenography at theEscuela Superior de Bellas Artes de la Nación Ernesto de la Cárcova [es] (now part of theUniversidad Nacional de las Artes).[1] He later pursued further studies at theEscuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón [es].
Particularly known for his work with artistic partnerHéctor Orezzoli, the two men have staged several theatrical revues featuring traditional dance forms liketango,flamenco, andsalsa which have toured internationally. They had a major critical success withFlamenco Pure in Seville in 1980, and a second revised version in Paris 1984.[2] They had another major success in Paris a year earlier withTango Argentino which premiered at the 1983Festival d'Automne [fr]. This work transferred toBroadway, garnering nominations for theTony Award for Best Musical and theTony Award for Best Choreography at the40th Tony Awards. In 1989 Segovia won theTony Award for Best Costume Design and was nominated for theTony Award for Best Scenic Design and theTony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his work on the Broadway musicalBlack and Blue.[3] He also won theKonex Award from Argentina in 1992 for his work as stage designer.
