Claudia Mahnke is a German operaticmezzo-soprano, a member of theOper Frankfurt, with guest appearances at leading opera houses and theBayreuth Festival.

Career

Mahnke was born inMeerane inSaxony, Germany. While she attended school she was already taking voice lessons. After theAbitur, she studied voice at theHochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. She made her stage debut in 1991, still during her studies. She was a member of the ensemble of theTheater Chemnitz from 1992 to 1995.[1]

In 1994, Mahnke gained the prize of theBundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin in the category opera/operetta/concert. She joined theStaatsoper Stuttgart in 1996. She performed the title role in Karl Amadeus Hartmann'sSimplicius Simplicissimus, in a production shown also at theMunich Opera Festival of 2005. The performance earned her several nominations forSinger of the Year of the journalOpernwelt. She was awarded the titleKammersängerin in August 2006.[2]

From the 2006/07 season, she has been a member of theOper Frankfurt. She appeared as a guest at leading opera houses such as theKomische Oper Berlin, theSan Francisco Opera andOpéra National de Lyon. She toured with the ensemble of theDeutsche Oper Berlin toSeoul.[1]

Mahnke made her debut at theBayreuth Festival in 2013 as Fricka, Waltraute and Second Norne in Wagner'sDer Ring des Nibelungen. After repeating these parts the two following years, she appeared as Brangäne inTristan und Isolde in 2016.[2]

In 2017, she appeared in Frankfurt as Dido inLes Troyens, convincingly interpreting in the final scene of 25 minutes the heroine's progression from hurt vulnerability to furious despair ("alle Stufen der schmerzlichen Verletztheit und der wütenden Verzweiflung").[3]
