Clarivate Plc is a British-Americanpublicly tradedanalytics company that operates a collection ofsubscription-based services, in the areas ofbibliometrics andscientometrics;business andmarket intelligence, andcompetitive profiling for pharmacy andbiotech,patents, andregulatory compliance;trademark protection, anddomain andbrand protection.[3] Clarivate calculates theimpact factor of scientific journals,[4] using data from itsWeb of Science product family, that also includes services and applications such asPublons,EndNote, andEndNote Click. Its other product families are Cortellis, DRG, CPA Global, Derwent, CompuMark, and Darts-ip,[3] and also the variousProQuest products and services.

Clarivate was formed in 2016, following the acquisition ofThomson Reuters' Intellectual Property and Science business byOnex Corporation andBaring Private Equity Asia.[5] Clarivate has acquired various companies since then, including, notably, ProQuest in 2021.

Clarivate was formerly the Intellectual Property and Science division ofThomson Reuters. Before 2008, it was known as Thomson Scientific.[6] In 2016, Thomson Reuters struck a $3.55 billion deal in which theyspun it off as an independent company, and sold it to private-equity firmsOnex Corporation andBaring Private Equity Asia.[7][8]

In May 2019, Clarivate merged with the Churchill Capital CorpSPAC to obtain a public listing on theNew York Stock Exchange (NYSE)[9] It currently trades with symbol NYSE:CLVT.[10][11]

After the2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, on March 11, 2022, Clarivate, which has an office inOdesa, Ukraine announced that it would cease all commercial activity in Russia.[12]

Operations

As of 2023,[update] the company conducts operations through threestrategic business units: Intellectual Property Group, Life Sciences & Healthcare Group, and Academic and Government Group, each led by apresident.[13][14]

Clarivate has been criticized for its anti-competitive practices in a highly oligopolisticacademic database market, for increasing the prices of the products it acquired, for the lack of further development and integration of the acquired products, for not developing its own products, for outsourcing jobs from the US and UK to India, and for eliminating telephone support for many of the acquired products.[15][16]

Leadership Changes

On July 11, 2022, Clarivate announced that Jerre Stead would retire from his role as Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer to become Non-Executive Chair of the Board of Directors. On September 1, 2022, Jonathan Gear, previously Chief Financial Officer ofIHS Markit, joined Clarivate on July 11, 2022, as CEO-elect, and became Chief Executive Officer on September 1, 2022.[17][18]

On September 1, 2022, Clarivate announced that Jerre Stead would retire from the Board on October 20, 2022, at which date Andrew Snyder, CEO of Cambridge Information Group and Vice Chairman of Clarivate, became the new Chair effective from that date. The Board has appointed Stead as Chairman Emeritus upon his Board retirement.[1] On August 6, 2024, Clarivate appointed former ProQuest CEO Matti Shem Tov as the Company's next CEO.[19]

  • January 17, 2020: Decision Resources Group (DRG), a leading healthcare research and consulting company, providing high-value healthcare industry analysis and insights.[25]
  • June 22, 2020: CustomersFirst Now, in intellectual property ("IP") software and tech-enabled services.[26]

  • December 1, 2021:ProQuest, software, data and analytics provider to academic, research and national institutions.[28] It was acquired for $5.3 billion fromCambridge Information Group in what was described as a "huge deal in the library and information publishing world". The company said that the operational concept behind the acquisition was integrating ProQuest's products and applications withWeb of Science.[29] Chairman of ProQuest Andy Snyder became the vice chairman of Clarivate.[30] TheScholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, an advocacy group for open access to scholarship, voicedantitrust concerns.[28] The acquisition had been delayed mid-year due to aFederal Trade Commission antitrust probe.[31]

TheWeb of Science (WoS; previously known as Web of Knowledge) is a paid-access platform that provides (typically via the internet) access to multiple databases that provide reference and citation data fromacademic journals,conference proceedings, and other documents in variousacademic disciplines.

The Web of Science Core Collection consists of six online indexing databases:[35][36]

Highly Cited Researchers

Clarivate publishes an annualHighly Cited Researchers list. The list compiles "the world's most influential researchers of the past decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year inWeb of Science."[52] According to Clarivate, researchers are selected for their "exceptional performance" in one or more of 21 fields (those used in Clarivate Essential Science Indicators, or ESI) or across several fields. The 2019 list of Highly Cited Researchers was released on November 19, 2019.[53]

Clarivate Citation Laureates

Clarivate Citation Laureates, formerly Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates, is a list of candidates considered likely to win theNobel Prize in their respective field. The candidates are so named based on thecitation impact of their publishedresearch. Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates was established in 1989. The list pertains to likelyNobel Prize winners in medicine, chemistry, physics, and economics. There appears to be a correlation between high citation rates for a published researcher and the award of prestigious accolades. Furthermore, citation rates disclose researchers furnishing instrumental contributions that advance the science of their respective field. Finally, choosing one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of the highest impact papers winnows the analysis to the topics and people most likely to be selected by Nobel selection committee.[54][55][56]

From 2002 to 2020, 59 individuals listed as Citation Laureates have received Nobel prizes.[57]

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is anannual publication by Clarivate.[58] It has been integrated with theWeb of Science and is accessed from theWeb of Science Core Collection. It provides information aboutacademic journals in thenatural andsocial sciences, includingimpact factors.JCR was originally published as a part of theScience Citation Index. Currently, theJCR, as a distinct service, is based oncitations compiled from theScience Citation Index Expanded and theSocial Sciences Citation Index.[59] As of the 2023 edition, journals from theArts and Humanities Citation Index and theEmerging Sources Citation Index have also been included.[60]

Top 100 Global Innovators Report
