Claire Liu (born May 25, 2000) is an American professionaltennis player. On 30 January 2023, she reached her career-high singles ranking of world No. 52.

Liu has won one singles title and one doubles title on theWTA Challenger Tour as well as six titles in singles and one doubles title on theITF Women's Circuit.

In 2017, she was the world No. 1 in the junior rankings, after winning theWimbledon girls' singles title, and finishing runner-up at theFrench Open. Liu also won a juniorGrand Slam doubles title atWimbledon withUsue Arconada in 2016.

Personal life

Liu grew up in Thousand Oaks, California. Both her parents areChinese immigrants.[1] In 2023, she began maintaining a blog that recounts her experiences on the professional tennis tour and personal life.[2]

Liu won theWimbledon junior doubles tournament in 2016 with fellow AmericanUsue Maitane Arconada, defeatingMariam Bolkvadze andCaty McNally in the final, in straight sets. The following year, after losing theFrench Open junior final toWhitney Osuigwe, she came back to win theWimbledon singles title againstAnn Li, making her the first American girl to win the event sinceChanda Rubin in 1992.[3] With this Grand Slam success, Liu rose to world No. 1 in the girls' junior rankings.[citation needed]

2015: First professional title, mixed doubles major debut

She won her first professional title in March 2015, at an Orlando clay-court tournament on theITF Women's Circuit.[4] At age 14, Liu was the youngest tennis player to win a professional tournament sinceAnna Kournikova in 1996.[5]

On her debut at theUS Open, Liu was granted a wildcard into the qualifying tournament. She beatVerónica Cepede Royg and ninth seedJana Čepelová in her first two matches, before losing to the 26th seed,Alexandra Panova, in the final round. Liu, alongsideTaylor Fritz, was also given a wildcard for themixed-doubles draw; they were defeated in the first round by the fourth seeds and eventual champions,Martina Hingis andLeander Paes.[citation needed]

2017–2021: First major match win, top 100

After securing two ITF tournament wins in 2017, Liu was granted again a wildcard into the qualifying for theUS Open. She defeated all three of her opponents in the qualifying tournament, earning her a spot in the singles main draw of a Grand Slam championship for the first time.[6] There, she was defeated in the first round, in straight sets byDuan Yingying.[citation needed]

Liu qualified for the main-draw at the2018 Wimbledon Championships and won her first match at a major by defeatingAna Konjuh,[7] before losing in the second round to 11th seed eventual champion,Angelique Kerber, in three sets.[8] Liu was the only player in the tournament to win a set against Kerber.[9]

In October 2019, Liu won her fourth title on the ITF Circuit at a $25k tournament inFlorence, South Carolina.[10]

After finishing as a runner-up in two tournaments in 2020 and another two in 2021, Liu won consecutive tournaments in May 2021 at the $60k event inCharlottesville, Virginia[11] and the $100kCharleston Pro Tennis.[12] As a result, she entered the top 100 on 23 August 2021.[citation needed]

2022: Maiden Tour final, first WTA 125 title

In May, Liu won her firstWTA 125 title at theTrophee Lagardère in Paris, defeatingBeatriz Haddad Maia in the final.[13][14] The following week she reached her maiden WTA Tour final inRabat, losing toMartina Trevisan.[15] As a result, she reached the top 75 on 23 May 2022.[citation needed]

She made it through to the semifinals at theJasmin Open inMonastir, Tunisia, defeating seventh seedKateřina Siniaková in the second round[16] and top seedOns Jabeur in the quarterfinals for her first win over a top-10 ranked player.[17][18] Her run was ended in the last four by fifth seed and eventual championElise Mertens.[19]

2023: WTA 1000 third round, Chicago Challenger final

At theAustralian Open, Liu overcameMadison Brengle[20] to reach the second round where she lost to 12th seedBelinda Bencic.[21]

She reached the third round of a WTA 1000 for the first time at the2Miami Open defeating Kateřina Siniaková by retirement[22] and lucky loserJulia Grabher[23] before she lost to 25th seed Martina Trevisan.[24]

At theItalian Open, Liu got the better of wildcardCamilla Rosatello in a first round match that went to three sets,[25] before losing to 32nd seedMarta Kostyuk.[26] She reached the second round at theFrench Open thanks to a win over qualifierYlena In-Albon,[27] but lost to top seed and eventual championIga Świątek.[28]

Liu defeated alternateOana Gavrilă[29] andIrina Khromacheva[30] at theSwedish Open to set up a quarterfinal meeting withLouisa Chirico which she lost in three sets.[31] The following week at theHungarian Open, gained revenge by defeating Louisa Chirico in the first round,[32] before recording wims over fourth seedYulia Putintseva[33] and eighth seedAnna Karolína Schmiedlová[34] to reach the semifinals where she lost toKateryna Baindl.[35]

Wins overIrina Fetecău,[36]Storm Hunter,[37] sixth seedRebeka Masarova[38] andCristina Bucșa,[39] saw Liu make it through to the final at theChicago Challenger where she lost toViktoriya Tomova.[40]

She reached the quarterfinals at theKorea Open, defeating qualifierKu Yeon-woo[41] and seventh seedArantxa Rus.[42] She lost in the last eight to top seed and eventual championJessica Pegula.[43]

2024–2025: Hiatus and comeback

Liu qualified for the2024 Miami Open and defeatedPetra Martić,[44] before losing to 10th seedDaria Kasatkina by retiring.[45]

She also qualified for the2024 Charleston Open, but lost her main-draw match to wildcardShelby Rogers.[46]

In May 2024, Liu won theITF tournament inSaint-Gaudens, France, defeatingSéléna Janicijevic in the final.[47] Later that month she lost in the first round of qualifying for theFrench Open toVeronika Erjavec in three sets.[48]

Liu took the rest of the 2024 season off for a mental health break.[49]

Seven months after her previous match, Liu returned to competitive tennis at the ITF W75 event inNonthaburi, Thailand, in January 2025, reaching the semifinals before withdrawing due to a neck problem.[49]

She qualified for the WTA 1000 tournament inIndian Wells in March, but lost toPolina Kudermetova in the first round.[50] Liu also qualified for theMiami Open, but again was eliminated in the first round, this time byLinda Fruhvirtová.[51]

Liu made it throughqualifing at theUS Open,[52] before losing toCristina Bucșa in the first round.[53]

In October 2025 at theGuangzhou Open, Liu qualified for the main-draw and defeated fourth seedAlexandra Eala,[54]Anna Bondár[55] andElla Seidel to reach her first WTA semifinal since July 2023.[56] She lost in the last four toLulu Sun.[57]
