Cilmeri (Welsh pronunciationⓘ; also spelled asCilmery) is a village andcommunity inPowys,mid-Wales, United Kingdom in the historic county ofBrecknockshire, two and a half miles west ofBuilth Wells on theA483 toLlandovery. The village is served byCilmeri railway station on theHeart of Wales Line. In the2001 census, Cilmeri Community had a population of 438 and 191 households.[1] The population at the 2011 had fallen slightly to 431.[2][3] The community includes the settlement ofLlanganten and a small part of Builth Wells west of theRiver Irfon.[4]
The village is famous for being close to the spot where the last nativeprince of Wales from the RoyalHouse of Aberffraw,Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was eitherkilled in action or captured alive and subjected tosummary execution by the soldiers ofKing Edward Longshanks, on11 December1282. A memorial stone to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was erected on the site in 1956 and serves as the focal point for an annual ceremony of remembrance byWelsh nationalists on the anniversary of his death.[5]
The community was formed in 1985, by a merger of the communities ofLlanganten andRhosferig, as well as part ofLlanafanfechan.[6]
