TheChurch of St. George (Croatian:Crkva svetog Georgija,[2][3]Serbian Cyrillic:Црква Светог Ђорђа) inTovarnik is aSerbian Orthodox church in easternCroatia built in 1799.[2] Together with the Orthodox church in Ilok andChurch of the Holy Venerable Mother Parascheva, it is under the spiritual jurisdiction of theEparchy of Srem with the seat in Sremski Karlovci, contrary to most of the other Serbian Orthodox churches in eastern Croatia that are under theEparchy of Osječko polje and Baranja.[4][5]
The Church of St. George was built in 1799. At the end ofWorld War II, after the fall ofNazi andUstaša forces on theSyrmian Front, a group of 51 local ethnicDanube Swabians andCroats were killed on the church ground byYugoslav Partisans.[6] In 2012, unknown perpetrators broke the church's windows by hitting stones at them during the night.[3]
