TheChurch of Our Lady of Sorrows (Spanish:Nuestra Señora de los Dolores) is aRoman Catholicparish church in theRoman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 105 Pitt Street betweenRivington Street andStanton Street on theLower East Side ofManhattan inNew York City.[2] The area formerly served Catholics who lived in the immigrant enclave ofKleindeutschland (Little Germany).[1]
The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was established in 1867 asOur Lady of the Seven Dolors Church and staffed by theCapuchin Friars.[1] It served as the national parish for the large number ofGerman Catholics who immigrated to New York in the late nineteenth century. Later it became a parish for Italian and then Hispanic immigrants.[1][3]
Our Lady of Sorrows was built 1867–1868 in theVictorian,Byzantine Revival, andRomanesque Revival style byHenry Engelbert.ArchbishopJohn McCloskey dedicated the church on September 6, 1868.[1]
The parish school was among 27 closed by the Archdiocese under the ArchbishopTimothy M. Dolan in January 2011.[4][5]
