Chronicle Books is aSan Francisco–based American publishing company that publishes books for both adults and children.

History

The company was established in 1967 by Phelps Dewey, an executive withChronicle Publishing Company, then-publisher of theSan Francisco Chronicle.[3] In 1999 it was bought by Nion McEvoy, great-grandson ofM. H. de Young, founder of theChronicle, from other family members who were selling off the company's assets.[3] At the time Chronicle Books had a staff of 130 and published 300 books per year, with a catalog of more than 1,000 books.

In 2000, McEvoy set up the McEvoy Group as aholding company.[4] In 2008, Chronicle acquired Handprint Books.[5]

Publications

Chronicle Books publishes books in subjects such as architecture, art, culture, interior design, cooking, children's books, gardening, pop culture, fiction, food, travel, and photography.[3]

It has published a number ofNew York Times Best Sellers; theGriffin and Sabine series byNick Bantock,Me Without You byLisa Swerling andRalph Lazar,Duck! Rabbit! byAmy Krouse Rosenthal andOlive, the Other Reindeer byVivian Walsh.

Other best sellers have includedThe Beatles Anthology,What's Your Poo Telling You?,Mom and Dad are Palindromes byMark Shulman, theWorst-Case Scenario series by Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht, thechildren's seriesIvy and Bean by Annie Barrows,All My Friends Are Dead, andPapa, Do You Love Me andGolden Kite Award winnerMama, Do You Love Me byBarbara M. Joosse. In March 2006 the company publishedBetween the Bridge and the River, a novel byCraig Ferguson.

Chronicle Books has published at least 25 books inThe Art of... series that showcase the evolution of artwork and stories ofanimated films, including many byWalt Disney Animation Studios,Pixar,DreamWorks andBlue Sky Studios.

The company also sellscustom publishing service and gift accessories (such as desktop calendars), and operates three retail stores in San Francisco – including one in the base of their corporate headquarters nearAT&T Park.

In 2017 and 2018, Chronicle publishedStar Trek Cats andStar Trek: The Next Generation Cats byJey Parks.

In 2006 the McEvoy Group purchasedSpin magazine in connection with the owners of San Francisco's7x7 magazine andCalifornia Home+Design.[4] McEvoy sold off the magazines by 2014.
