Christopher Charles Rowland (born 21 May 1947) is an EnglishAnglican priest and theologian. He wasDean Ireland's Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at theUniversity of Oxford from 1991 to 2014.[1]

Life

Rowland was born on 21 May 1947 inDoncaster, then in theWest Riding of Yorkshire, and was educated atDoncaster Grammar School. He then studied atChrist's College, Cambridge, and for ordination in theChurch of England atRidley Hall, Cambridge.

He was ordained deacon in 1975 and priest in 1976, serving ascurate at two parishes in theNewcastle upon Tyne area (Benwell 1975–1978,Gosforth 1978–1979). Between 1974 and 1979, he lectured in religious studies atNewcastle University, returning to Cambridge as aFellow ofJesus College, Cambridge, in 1979. He was an assistant lecturer in divinity at the university from 1983 to 1985, then lecturer from 1985 to 1991.[2]

In 1991, he was appointedDean Ireland's Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at theUniversity of Oxford, a post that carries with it a fellowship atThe Queen's College, Oxford. He retired from Oxford in 2014 and was appointedprofessor emeritus.[3] He was appointed Canon Theologian ofLiverpool Cathedral in 2005.[2]
