Christopher Bailey (born May 29, 2000) is an American track and field athlete. He has won gold medals at theOlympic Games, theWorld Athletics Championships andWorld Athletics Indoors Championships.[1]

Early life

FromAtlanta, Georgia he attended Carver High School,Mississippi Valley State University, and theUniversity of Tennessee, before attending theUniversity of Arkansas.[2][3]

Career

2023: World Championships medalist

In January 2023, Bailey set a newArkansas Razorbacks College record over 400 m of 45:09 to break the previous record of 45:29 set in 2005 by Terry Gatson.[4] Bailey won the NCAA Indoors 4 × 400 m title as part of the Arkansas Razorbacks in March 2023 inAlbuquerque,New Mexico.[5]

Competing at the2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Bailey qualified fastest from the 400 m heats.[6] He then reached the final with the fifth fastest time.[7] He was selected for the2023 World Athletics Championships inBudapest in August 2023, winning a gold medal as part of the men's 4 x 400 metres relay team, running the preliminary round although not the final.[8][9]

2024: Olympic Games medalist

He was a silver medalist running the anchor leg for the American 4 × 400 m relay team at the2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships inGlasgow in March 2024.[10]

In April 2024, he was selected as part of the American team for the2024 World Athletics Relays inNassau, Bahamas.[11] He competed at the2024 Summer Olympics over 400 metres in August 2024, qualifying for the final and placing sixth overall.[12] He also competed in themen's 4 × 400 m relay at the Games, winning the gold medal with the American relay team.[13]

2025: World Indoor Champion

He won the 400 metres at the2025 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.[14] He was selected for the2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships inNanjing in March 2025, where he led a clean sweep for the USA of the medals in the individual 400 metres, winning the gold ahead of compatriotsBrian Faust andJacory Patterson.[15][16][17]

He won the openingGrand Slam Track race in the Long Sprints category at the inaugural slam in Kingston, Jamaica on 4 April 2025, running 44.34 for the 400 metres.[18] He ran a personal best 44.27 seconds to finish second in the 400 metres at the2025 Xiamen Diamond League event in China, in April 2025.[19] Competing at the2025 Shanghai Diamond League on 3 May 2025, he won the men’s 400m in 44.17 seconds.[20] He ran a personal best 44.15 seconds at the2025 Prefontaine Classic on 5 July.[21] On 2 August, he finished second at the2025 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 44.43 seconds.[22] He placed fifth in the 400 metres at theDiamond League Final in Zurich on 28 August.[23]

In September 2025, he competed at the2025 World Athletics Championships inTokyo, Japan, reaching the semi-finals of themen's 400 metres.[24] He later won a silver medal in themen's 4 x 400 metres relay.[25] Initially, his American team had not qualified for the final but the handover between his teammatesBryce Deadmon andDemarius Smith was adjudged to have been impacted by a runner for Zambia, and they were put forward for a run-off with the same team in the same lanes against Kenya, who had also been impacted. He ran as they won the run-off on the morning of the final, with a time of 2:58.48, before a different quartet ran the final later that day, placing second behind Botswana.[26][27]
