Professor of Bioinformatics
Christine Anne Orengo FRS is aProfessor ofBioinformatics atUniversity College London (UCL)[ 2] [ 6] [ 7] [ 8] known for her work onprotein structure , particularly theCATH database .[ 5] [ 9] Orengo serves aspresident of theInternational Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), the first woman to do so in the history of the society.[ 10]
Orengo studiedChemical Physics at theUniversity of Bristol where she was awarded aBachelor of Science degree in 1976.[ 11] She continued her studies at theUniversity of Aberdeen where she was awarded aMaster of Science degree inMedical Physics in 1977 for research on the disruption ofiron metabolism inlaboratory rats withYoshida sarcomas .[ 12] She was awarded aPhD for research on theredox properties ofhaem inproteins in 1984 from UCL.[ 13]
Career and research [ edit ] Following her PhD, Orengo worked in industry as Chief Chemist for FCI International, Brussels and mathematical modeller for Humphreys & Glasgow in London.[ 11] In 1987 she was appointed apostdoctoral researcher at theNational Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) inMill Hill where she worked until 1990.[ 9] She joined the department ofbiochemistry andmolecular biology at UCL and in 1995 and was awarded aMedical Research Council (MRC) seniorfellowship in Bioinformatics. She was promoted to Professor of Bioinformatics in 2002.[ 9]
Orengo's research analyses genes, proteins and biological systems usingcomputational methods toclassify proteins into evolutionary families . Her research has been funded by the Medical Research Council and theBiotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).[ 14]
Orengo is co-editor withDavid Jones andJanet Thornton of the textbookBioinformatics: Genes, Proteins and Computers .[ 15] As of 2021[update] , according toGoogle Scholar [ 2] andScopus [ 6] her most cited work has been published inNature ,[ 16] Nucleic Acids Research ,[ 17] [ 18] Structure [ 5] and theJournal of Molecular Biology .[ 19] [ 20] Her former doctoral students includeCamilla Pang ,[ 3] Sonja Lehtinen[ 21] [ 22] and Ian Sillitoe.[ 23]
Orengo was elected a member of theEuropean Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2014 and aFellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2019.[ 1] [ 24] [ 25]
