TheChristian Social Party (CSP) (German:Christlich-soziale Partei,French:Parti chrétien-social) is apolitical party inSwitzerland of theChristian left.[3] The CSP is more aligned withsocial democracy than the other majorChristian party, theChristian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland (CVP), which is moreeconomically liberal. With the moderateChristian left as its background, the CSP commits itself to social-democratic[3] andenvironmentalist[3] political solutions. The core principles of the CSP contain, among others, "solidarity with the socially and economically disadvantaged and the preservation of the environment."[This quote needs a citation]

Electoral power

[edit]

As of 2016, the CSP does not hold any seats in theNational Council of Switzerland.

A seat in the lower house was once held for decades byHugo Fasel representing the canton ofFribourg.

On a cantonal level, the CSP has many elected members, mainly in theRoman Catholiccantons ofValais,Fribourg,Obwalden andJura. In the latter, the CSP had until late 2010 one elected member in the Executive body, theConseil d'Etat of theRepublic of Jura (where it operates as theIndependent Christian Social Party).

Positions

[edit]

A member of theChristian left, the CSP is acentre-left political party overall and has strongenvironmentalist views. It also has social values and aims to tax richer people. On a societal point of view, it has more progressive views and acts in favour ofabortion rights,same-sex relationships andeuthanasia, which differs strongly with other common Christian political parties, which are traditionallysocially conservative.
