Chris Shula (born February 5, 1986) is an American professionalfootball coach and formerlinebacker who is thedefensive coordinator for theLos Angeles Rams of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football atMiami (OH) from 2004 to 2008.
Shula was born inMiami, Florida. His father,Dave, was a football coach, and the family lived inFlorida,Texas, andOhio. Shula is also a grandson ofDon Shula and a nephew ofMike Shula. He attended high school inFort Lauderdale, Florida. After graduation from high school in 2004, Shula returned to Ohio and enrolled atMiami University and played linebacker for the RedHawks, starting for two seasons.
From 2010 to 2013, Shula was agraduate assistant coach atBall State University andIndiana University Bloomington whereKevin Wilson was head coach. In 2014, he landed his first full time assistant job as thedefensive coordinator at theJohn Carroll University. After leading John Carroll to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals in 2014, Shula moved defensive quality control coach of the NFL'sSan Diego Chargers, where he worked underMike McCoy.
Shula accepted the job as assistant linebackers coach for theLos Angeles Rams in 2017, where he worked under his former college teammate,Sean McVay. Shula helped led the team to twoSuper Bowl appearances, including berths in seven NFL playoffs.
Shula was born on February 5, 1986, inMiami, Florida. He attendedSt. Thomas Aquinas inFort Lauderdale, Florida.
Shula playedlinebacker for theMiami RedHawks[1] from 2004 until 2008, where he was teammates withSean McVay.[2]
In 2010, Shula was hired as the assistant linebackers coach atBall State University.[3]
In 2011, Shula joinedIndiana University as a graduate assistant.
In 2014, Shula was hired as the defensive coordinator atJohn Carroll University.[4]
In 2015, Shula was hired by theSan Diego Chargers as a defensive quality control coach under head coachMike McCoy.[5]
In 2017, Shula was hired by theLos Angeles Rams as their assistant linebackers coach under head coachSean McVay.[6] In 2019, Shula was promoted to outside linebackers coach.
On February 23, 2021, Shula was promoted to linebackers coach.[7] That year, the Rams becameSuper Bowl champions when the Rams defeated theCincinnati Bengals inSuper Bowl LVI.[8] In 2022, Shula was promoted to pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. In 2023, Shula was promoted to pass rush coordinator and linebackers coach.
On February 2, 2024, Shula was promoted to defensive coordinator for the Rams, replacingRaheem Morris, following his departure to become the head coach of theAtlanta Falcons.[9]
Chris is the son of formerCincinnati Bengals head coachDave Shula. He is also the grandson of the lateHall of Fame coachDon Shula.[10][11][12] Shula's uncle,Mike, was formerly head coach atAlabama and worked as an offensive coach for several NFL teams, most recently serving as the offensive coordinator for theSouth Carolina Gamecocks.[13]
