Christopher Corchiani Sr. (born March 28, 1968) is an American-Italian former professionalbasketball player who played at thepoint guard position. He played briefly in theNational Basketball Association after a college career atNC State. Corchiani was the first college player to amass 1,000 career assists and as of 2024 is one of only four players in history to achieve the milestone.
Born inCoral Gables, Florida, Corchiani attended Miami's Kendall Acres Academy, andHialeah-Miami Lakes High School, inHialeah, Florida.
Corchiani'scollege basketball career lasted from 1988 to 1991, atNorth Carolina State University, where he played with theNC State Wolfpack. Corchiani was the firstNCAA Division I player to record1,000 assists in a career.[1] In the 1990–91 season, heled the nation in assists per game average, at 9.7 per game. At the time he finished his career, he was in 5th place on theNCAA's all-time steals list.
Corchiani was selected by theOrlando Magic, with the 9th pick of the 2nd round (36th overall), of the1991 NBA draft. In addition to the Magic, he played with two otherNBA teams, theBoston Celtics and theWashington Bullets. He also played professionally in Italy, Turkey, Spain, and Germany.[2] He was a member of theBayer Leverkusen team, which captured the GermanBundesliga title in 1996 under the guidance of coachDirk Bauermann.[3] In 2002, he won the Spanish national championship withTau Cerámica, alongside players likeElmer Bennett,Luis Scola andAndrés Nocioni, coached byDuško Ivanović.[4]
After retiring from basketball, he settled inRaleigh, North Carolina, working as arealtor, then as the owner of amortgage bank. In 2007, he founded atitle insurance agency.[5]
