Chris Cook (born December 23, 1971)[ 1] is an American professional race car driver and driving instructor, who instructs at theBob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving and competes irregularly inNASCAR and other racing series, specializing inroad course racing as aroad course ringer .
Cook was the youngest driver to become a chief instructor at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.[ 2] He has competed in theIMSA Firestone Firehawk Endurance Championship and inlate model stock cars atNashville Speedway USA ,[ 3] as well as in selected NASCAR events, and in theFormula D championship.[ 4] Cook is best known indrifting for a wreck at the 2007 NOPI Drift Los Angeles in which hisDodge Viper flipped, knocking Cook unconscious.[ 5]
Cook's No. 37 car atSonoma Raceway in 2011 After making a name for himself as an instructor for NASCAR drivers in road course racing,[ 2] including instructingTony Stewart in the art of road course driving,[ 6] Cook made his debut in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2005 atInfineon Raceway , driving forJoe Nemechek and finishing 28th.[ 7] [ 8] He failed to qualify for several other races in 2005, 2006 and 2011 before qualifying for the 2011 Sprint Cup Series race at Infineon, substituting forTomy Drissi in theMax Q Motorsports #37,[ 9] and finishing 27th.[ 10] He is one of the drivers referred to as a "road course ringer", specialist drivers who often replace regular NASCAR drivers at the two road course races on the tour schedule.[ 11]
Cook has also competed in twelve races in the NASCARNationwide Series (formerly the NASCAR Busch Series) between 1999 and 2009, with a best finish of 20th atAutódromo Hermanos Rodríguez inMexico City in 2006 while driving for John McNelly.[ 12]
Cook has also competed in the24 Hours of Daytona , running forRick Ware Racing in the 2012 edition of the event;[ 13] he finished 38th in the race. Later in 2012 he returned to the Sprint Cup Series, driving the No. 19 Toyota forHumphrey Smith Racing atSonoma Raceway ,[ 14] finishing 42nd; he also drove forRick Ware Racing in theNationwide Series atWatkins Glen International in August.[ 15]
Cook's No. 51 atSonoma Raceway in 2018 In 2018, Cook returned to theMonster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with Ware, driving his No. 51 entry.[ 16]
