chown/ˈtʃoʊn/, short forchangeowner, is ashellcommand for changing the owning user ofUnix-basedfile systemfiles – includingspecial files such asdirectories.
The ownership of a file may only be altered by a super-user (such as viasudo). A regular user cannotgive away their ownership of a file.[1]
The version ofchown bundled inGNUcoreutils was written by David MacKenzie and Jim Meyering.[2]
The command is available forWindows viaUnxUtils.[3] The command was ported toIBM i.[4]
