Chonburi (Thai:ชลบุรี,RTGS: Chon Buri,IAST:jalapurī,pronounced[tɕ͡ʰōnbū.rīː]ⓘ) is the capital ofChonburi Province and, as part of the districtMueang Chonburi, theseventh-largest city inThailand. It is about 100 km southeast ofBangkok, on the coast of theGulf of Thailand, and has an urban population of 342,959.[1] Its name means 'city of water'.
Chonburi, along with the urban areas ofSi Racha andPattaya, forms aconurbation known as the Pattaya-Chonburi Metropolitan Area, which has a total population of 999,092.
Chonburi town has had town (thesaban mueang) status since 1935 and makes up only a small part of the current city-scape.[2]
Chonburi has atropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classificationAw). Winters are fairly dry and very warm. Temperatures rise until April, which is hot with the average daily maximum at 35.2 °C (95.4 °F). Themonsoon season runs from May through October, with heavy rain and somewhat cooler temperatures during the day, although nights remain warm.

The main road through Chonburi is Thailand Route 3, also known asSukhumvit Road. To the northwest it connects toBangkok and to south it connects toRayong,Chanthaburi, andTrat. Route 344 leads east toKlaeng, also on Route 3. Route 7 runs parallel to Route 3 but bypasses the densely populated coastal area, connecting to the beach resort city ofPattaya.
A number of beaches andKhao Sam Muk hill by theBangkok Bay seashore are important tourist attractions in Chonburi city.
As Thailand moves tolegalize gambling, Chonburi is expected to be one of the locations of anintegrated resort.[6]
Unithai Shipyard will serve as the main facility to repair United States Navy ships in the Thailand area.[7]
