Deepak Chakraborty (born 2 November 1955), known professionally asChiranjeet Chakraborty, is an Indian actor and director in theBengali film industry located inKolkata,West Bengal.[2][3] He is the son of renowned cartoonist Shaila Chakraborty. He is also a politician and aMember of the Legislative Assembly ofGovernment of West Bengal. He has been conferred upon the prestigiousMahanayak Samman by the Govt. of West Bengal in 2012.[4]

He made his debut with the 1981 filmSonay Sohaga. It was a box office failure. He gained popularity after starring inAnjan Choudhury's 1984 filmShatru. His first hit in a lead role was the 1985 filmAntarale. After that, he had a series of hits in his career likePratikar,Prateek,Paapi,Paap Punya,Beder Meye Josna,Amarkantak,Jeeban Jouban,Bhoy,Shaitan,Pennam Kolkata,Bedenir Prem,Tridhara,Jeeban Joddha,Phiriye Dao,Agnitrishna,Shakti,Rakte Lekha,Rakta Nadir Dhara,Tomar Rakte Amar Sohaag,Trishul,Chotushkone and many others.[5]

He got a turning point in his career after starring inRituparno Ghosh's 2000 filmBariwali. He is also a famous stage artist. Chakraborty is considered to be one of the most successful actors in the history ofBengali Cinema.[6][7]

Education and early career

Chiranjeet completed his Higher Secondary fromMitra Institution (Main). He studiedB.E. inArchitecture fromJadavpur University, but did not appear for his final examination. He has worked forDesh magazine and as a newsreader on TV. He is married and has a daughter.[8]

Political career

Chiranjeet contested the2011 West Bengal state assembly election inBarasat Constituency forAll India Trinamool Congress and won the seat. In March 2021, Mamata Banerjee announced Chiranjeet would contest fromBarasat Vidan Sabha constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election 2021. Chakraborty regained the Barasat constituency as AITC candidate after defeating BJP candidate Sankar Chatterjee with a margin of 23,783 votes as declared on 2 May 2021. As of 2024, he is aMember of the Legislative Assembly ofGovernment of West Bengal. In 2022, he expressed his opinion regardingPartha Chatterjee's arrest.[9]
