China–Sierra Leone relations refer to the foreign relations betweenChina andSierra Leone. The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Sierra Leone establisheddiplomatic relations on July 29, 1971. China has an embassy inFreetown, while Sierra Leone has an embassy inBeijing.

History

In 2016, China and Sierra Leone formed a strategic partnership.[2]: 211 

Economic relations

Economic relations between Sierra Leone and China are mostly positive.[3]

Development assistance

From 2000 to 2011, there are approximately 37 Chinese official development finance projects identified in Sierra Leone through various media reports.[4] These projects range from a $22 milliondebt relief,[5] to assisting in highway repair projects and constructing Charlotte Hydropower Project,[6] and aconcessional loan of US$16.6 million to supportSierratel'sCDMA project.[7]

Medical assistance

Afriendship hospital was funded by China in Sierra Leone, called theChina-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital.[8]

During theEbola outbreak in western Africa, Sierra Leone was one of the countries to which China'sPeople's Liberation Army provided medical personnel.[9]: 245 

On its 2017 medical mission to Africa, thePeople's Liberation Army Navy hospital shipPeace Ark traveled to Sierra Lerone.[9]: 284 

Cultural relations

University of Sierra Leone has aConfucius Institute.[10]

Political relations

Sierra Leone follows theone China principle. It recognizes the People's Republic of China as the sole government of China andTaiwan as an integral part of China's territory, and supports all efforts by the PRC to "achievenational reunification". It also considersHong Kong,Xinjiang andTibet to be China's internal affairs.[11]

In June 2020, Sierra Leone was one of 53 countries that backed theHong Kong national security law at theUnited Nations.[12]
