Chimpui (Japanese:チンプイ,Hepburn:Chinpui) is a Japanesemanga created byFujiko F. Fujio [ja] in 1985. It tells the story of two cutealiens that come to Earth to find the girl who will marry their prince of planet Mahl and find one in a sixth grade girl named Eri. It was subsequently adapted into ananime television series.

It is the last children's manga to be created by Fujio.[1]

Characters

  • Chimpui(チンプイ), a mouse-like alien, who tells about the prince's marriage to a girl named Eri. Sometimes he tries to convince Eri to marry the prince and helps Eri on Earth or while on Mahl. He is voiced byJunko Hori.[2]
  • Eri Kasuga(春日エリ), a 12-year-oldChinese-Japanese (via her ancestor, Kukuru fromDoraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan)[3][4] 6th grader who is atomboy and also Chimpui's best friend. She is a healthy person. She is voiced byMegumi Hayashibara.[2]
  • Wanderyu(ワンダユウ), a dog-like alien, who is Chimpui's pal. He also helps Eri, but sometimes she hates him. Eri calls him "Grandpa Wada". He is voiced byJōji Yanami.[2]
  • Uchiki Sho(内木翔), a sixth grader who is good at studies but is weak at sports. He is Eri's best friend and Eri has a crush on him. He dreams of becoming an astronaut one day. He is voiced bySasaki Nozomu.[2]
  • Sunemi Koganeyama(小金山スネ美), she is Eri's rich friend with a fox-like face. She is voiced byYukiko Nashiha.
  • Masao Oeyama(大江山政男), a strong 6th grader who is good at sports and he bullies Uchiki. He is voiced byDaiki Nakamura.[2]
  • Masao Koyama(小山政夫), the boy who has the same name as Masao Oeyama and also a 6th grader who is absolutely short for his age and is Oeyama's sidekick. He's known as Komasa(小政) in short. He is voiced byJun'ichi Kanemaru.[2]
  • Hotaru Fujino(藤野ほたる), a classmate and a friend of Eri. She's the only character that appears in the anime besides the manga. She is voiced bySanae Miyuki.
  • Sayaka Hata(秦さやか), a classmate and a friend of Eri. She is voiced byMiki Itō.
  • Prince Lulealv(ルルロフ殿下), a prince that his face is never shown in the manga or anime. Chimpui tells Eri that he is the most charming person on planet Mahl. It is also told that it is Eri's fate to marry him. He only appears in Eri's dreams (nightmares).

The series was first broadcast byTV Asahi from November 2, 1989 to April 18, 1991, then aired in Europe and Asia in 1991 into multiple languages including English and was also aired onDisney Channel Asia.[5][6]

A movie was released on March 10, 1990. In it, Eri stars in a movie portraying her wedding to Prince Lulealv when the original actress breaks her leg.
