Chilia Veche (Romanian pronunciation:/kiˈlija ˈveˈke/; meaningOld Chilia;Ukrainian:Стара Кілія,romanized: Stara Kiliia) is acommune inTulcea County,Northern Dobruja,Romania, in theDanube Delta. It gave its name to theChilia branch of theDanube, which separates it fromUkraine. It is composed of four villages: Câșlița, Chilia Veche, Ostrovu Tătaru and Tatanir.
Founded by theGreek Byzantines, it was given its name after the word for "granaries" -κελλίa,kellia, recorded earliest in 1241 in the works ofPersianchroniclerRashid al-Din. Some scholars consider the mediaevalGenoese trade centre known asLycostomo (Λυκόστομο) was also located here.[citation needed] A town on the other side of theDanube, now inUkraine, known asNova Kiliia (Romanian:Chilia Nouă) or "New Chilia", was built byStephen the Great ofMoldavia in order to counteract theOttoman Empire (that had taken control of the former town in the 15th century).
Ostrovu Tătaru village, which has no permanent population, is located onTătaru Mare Island.
