Chile Chico (Spanish forLittle Chile) is atown inGeneral Carrera Province,Aisén Region,Patagonia,Chile. It is located on the south shore ofGeneral Carrera Lake. Chile Chico, which has around 3,000 inhabitants, is the eponymous capital of thecommune and capital of theGeneral Carrera Province of the Aysén Region.
The town is 6 km (4 mi) west of the border withArgentina and 8 km from the Argentine town ofLos Antiguos, with which it is connected by a paved road. A car ferry connects the town withPuerto Ingeniero Ibáñez on the north shore of the lake.
Since 2017 Chile Chico has produced the world's southernmost wine.[6][7][8] This wine is produced at the experimental vineyard of Undurraga that is part ofInstituto de Investigación Agropecuaria.[7]
Itsrain shadow location gives Chile Chico amediterranean climate (Köppen:Csb), unusually dry for its latitude with only half the rainfall ofBalmaceda nearby and less than a tenth that received at many coastal locations in the Aisén region. Its moderate climate is sometimes compared toMiddle Chile but is most similar to that of places likeSequim which lie in a similar westerly wind rain shadow. The record high is 36.4 °C (97.5 °F) in January 2013 and the record low was −13.8 °C (7.2 °F) in July 1982.[9]

According to the 2002census of theNational Statistics Institute, Chile Chico spans an area of 5,922.3 km2 (2,287 sq mi) and has 4,444 inhabitants (2,378 men and 2,066 women). Of these, 3,042 (68.5%) lived inurban areas and 1,402 (31.5%) inrural areas. The population grew by 18.3% (687 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[3]
As a commune, Chile Chico is a third-leveladministrative division of Chile administered by amunicipal council, headed by analcalde who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Luperciano Muñoz González (PPD).[1][2]
Within theelectoral divisions of Chile, Chile Chico is represented in theChamber of Deputies by René Alinco (PDC) and David Sandoval (UDI) as part of the 59th electoral district, which includes the entireAisén Region. The commune is represented in theSenate by Antonio Horvath Kiss (RN) and Patricio Walker Prieto (PDC) as part of the 18th senatorial constituency (Aisén Region).
