Chicago Hittite Dictionary

Hittite language dictionary project

TheChicago Hittite Dictionary (CHD) (The Hittite Dictionary of the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures of the University of Chicago) is a project at theUniversity of Chicago'sInstitute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (formerly known as the Oriental Institute) to create a comprehensive dictionary of theHittite language. The project was founded byHans Gustav Güterbock andHarry Hoffner in 1975 and funded by theNational Endowment for the Humanities.[1] As of January 2026[update], it is co-edited byTheo van den Hout andPetra Goedegebuure.[2] Hoffner originally hoped that the project could be completed by 2000,[3] though as of 2005 it was expected to last until 2045.[4] It is one of several dictionary projects at the institute, including theChicago Assyrian Dictionary and theChicago Demotic Dictionary.
